I've just confirmed something that I've long suspected: when I play the bass, it sounds like a dying moose. I got my first clue when every time I practiced, Sully squinted his eyes like he was hearing nails on a chalkboard and crawled away as fast as his little limbs would carry him, and Hanne yelled, "Quiet! It's too loud!" Because "too loud" are the only words in her vocabulary to express, "that sounds like 200 flies drowning in a puddle of syrup."
I was going to play a bass solo tomorrow morning at the Life Care Center, but after hearing the video of it played back, I'm contemplating working up a piano solo instead, since this is what I imagine it sounded like when the dinosaurs stumbled into the tar pits.
You probably don't want to watch this video, but I'm posting it anyway, just in case anyone out there is a masochist.

My viola sounded like a dying... what animal does a viola sound like?...until I changed the strings last week. It's like I have a new instrument! (I am realizing 5 years is a little too long to wait and change the strings).
Maybe I have no taste at all. It was such a pleasure to hear you play again. Perhaps your kids just need to get used to the moose? It's a fine animal. When we arrive (sometime Monday) I'll have my guitar with me. No excuses this time. We need to jam. Let's see what they think about that. (Pretty please? Playing duet with you is the most fun I've ever had with an instrument.)
Em, it's been 7 years since I changed the strings. I guess it's time, eh? But it costs $120, so it's hard for me to justify it when I never play.
Kathleen, for sure we need to jam!
love it, always will!!!
The moose is a most noble beast. There is no shame in sounding like one, IF you did.
I second the suggestion for new strings.
And the strings justify themselves: if your bass sounded better, you would play more.
I liked it but I'm no musician and are in awe of you being so awesome and am grateful you posted it.
Maybe get new strings and play again for us.
$120 isn't much when Pugs is doing so well right ;)
I think it sounds quite good, despite sound recording quality! Don't forget that no recording device is as true to life as it should be, that's physically (as in physics) very difficult. Another plug, I'm guessing this center is full of old people? Low pitches are probably the only ones they can still hear! Go for it, Schmath. So fun to see you play the bass again! I remember when you got it. And I got mine.
I decided to go with piano. I'm going to keep practicing and get some new strings and see if I can get it to sound better. Even though I've had this bass for 7 years, I've never put in the time to get to know it, so I don't really play it in tune, and that's a big part of the problem.
You're full of crap! I'm 99% sure you've never heard a moose die!
Oh my, you're talented! That was beautiful. I think that they'll love it!
come on, its time to post something. Dying Moose was so last week. We want something this week.
I guess it's time to play again! I decided if I wanted my kids to be playing instruments, what good was it to have my viola and never play it? So they see me go off to symphony rehearsals and concerts and actually practice the thing. Hopefully that will inspire them to practice more than I did as a kid.
